A little more progress on the Dana 44 axle today.
Thanks to a slide hammer and axle puller attachment, I got the axle shafts out today and then pounded off the drum brakes (I got new ones coming):
The axle is upside down because I painted the bottom today

Started removing rust and grease

Painted 3 coats of Rustoleum Hammered Paint

Waiting for it to dry, then gonna flip it over and make sure I got the bottom good with paint.
Then all I got left is:
1. New complete drum brakes (on order)
2. New brake hard lines (Will order tomorrow)
3. Mount to XJ
4. Fill with oil
5. Celebrate!

Some progress on tearing apart the Dana 44 axle today:
got the axle to the garage

heavy duty D44 cover (it’s about 3 times as thick as the cover i took off the D44 from the factory)

cover popped (was hoping to get lucky and find a trak-loc, but it’s just an open carrier. at least everything looks good inside)

A few days ago I ordered an XJ Dana 44 axle from a junkyard and it showed up today. Now I just need to find the time to do the swap!

Brakes definitely need to be rebuilt.
Will probably grind all the rust off and paint flat black.
Hell, I’ll probably rebuild the whole axle :p
